GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior Mark Lumpa and sophomore Andy Perez combined for eight hits to lead the Duke baseball team to a 12-2 win over UNC Greensboro Tuesday evening at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. Duke’s 17 hits in the game were one shy of the team’s season high, set Apr. 9 against the Spartans.
Lumpa and Perez reached base nine times, setting the tables for the Blue Devils’ three, four and five hitters – Jeff Kremer, Jordan Betts and Chris Marconcini – who drove in six runs. Kremer finished the night 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored, Betts went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Marconcini was 1-for-3 with 3 RBI.
Junior Drew Van Orden (3-5) earned the win, allowing one run on four hits over three innings. Freshman James Marvel started the game and threw the first three frames, giving up one run on three hits. Sophomore Sarkis Ohanian and freshman Michael Matuella pitched the final three, hitless innings.
After two scoreless innings to start the game, Duke broke through with a run in the top of the third for the early lead. Perez started the rally with his second single of the game and Lumpa followed suit before Kremer sent a RBI base hit through the left side.
UNC Greensboro answered in the bottom of the frame as Sean Guite roped a leadoff triple and scored on a Nin Marrero grounder to short.
Ryan Munger began the fifth with a single and Perez doubled for his third hit of the ball game. Munger came home on a Lumpa infield single and Perez scored on a wild pitch to give Duke the 3-1 advantage. The Blue Devils plated a third run in the frame on a Marconcini sacrifice fly, his 35th RBI of the season.
Duke’s lead extended to 6-1 in the sixth as Lumpa drove in a pair of runs with his fourth hit of the night. Sophomore Grant McCabe was hit by a pitch to start the frame and Munger picked up his second hit of the evening to set the table for Lumpa.
TJ Spina singled and scored on an Lloyd Enzor RBI base hit in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Duke advantage to 6-2.
Three more Blue Devil runs came home to put Duke on top 9-3 in the seventh. Betts, Marconcini and McCabe each drove in a run to support the Blue Devil cause.
A Perez leadoff single followed by three consecutive walks and sacrifice flies from Marconcini and junior Matt Berezo scored three more in the eighth.
Blair Betts (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing three runs while recording just one out. Spina led the UNCG offense with a 3-for-4 performance.
Next up, Duke plays host to NC State at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
