DURHAM, N.C.—The heralded Duke men’s soccer freshman class shined in the Blue Devils 3-2 exhibition win over the College of Charleston this evening at Koskinen Stadium. Rookies accounted for two goals and an assist as Duke finished its exhibition season 3-0.

Freshmen Markus Fjortøft and Jeremy Ebobisse both recorded their first tallies since joining the Blue Devils, while Macario Hing-Glover picked up an assist. Duke closes its preseason schedule with wins over Old Dominion (6-1), Radford (3-0) and College of Charleston. The Blue Devils are averaging four goals per game and just over 18 shots per game.

Duke controlled the run of play for much of the 90 minutes, building a 3-0 lead before the Cougars capitalized on a pair of Blue Devil mistakes to climb back into the game with two goals a minute apart.

Attacking from the opening whistle, it was apparent Duke was going to find a way to score. After a few good looks at goal just missed in the first 20 minutes, senior Sean Davis stepped up to serve a corner kick right into the middle of the 18-yard box.

Fjørtoft, a presence in the air, jumped over everyone and headed the ball home for his first two points as a Blue Devil. Just over 10 minutes later it was senior captain Jake Butwin finding the back of the net courtesy of Hing-Glover’s service from the right wing.

The Phoenix, Ariz., native broke loose on the right sideline and slid a cross into the box for Butwin to put away for the 2-0 lead at the half.

Duke’s comfortable 2-0 lead quickly extended to three 40 seconds into the second period. In his first action as a Blue Devil, Ebobisse collected a pass in the middle and wasted no time striking it past Cougar goalkeeper Alex Young.

Despite the Blue Devils holding the majority of possession in the second half, College of Charleston was able to get on the board against the run of play in the 73 minute. TK Abderahman slipped his shot past Duke goalkeeper Wilson Fisher to make it 3-1 and one minute later Nico Rittmeyer used a good piece of individual skill to make it 3-2.

Duke regained its composure and closed out the final 17 minutes for the 3-2 victory. Joe Ohaus earned the start in goal for the Blue Devils and made one save in 70 minutes of action. Fisher had one stop in his 20 minutes in the net.

The Blue Devils officially kick off the 2014 campaign Aug. 29 in the John Rennie Nike Invitational at 7:30 p.m. Duke will take on Loyola Marymount. Tickets are $5 for everyone ages six-and-up.
