CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Two doubles teams and two singles standouts from the Duke women’s tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2013 USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Championship on Saturday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Overall in Saturday’s action, Duke collected an 8-4 record in singles and doubles.
In doubles action in the morning, Duke’s top-seeded tandem of Beatrice Capra and Hanna Mar dropped an 8-7 (6) ledger to North Carolina’s Kate Vialle and Laura Slater to open play. The Blue Devils’ other two teams made easy work of their opponents as Annie Mulholland and Chalena Scholl posted an 8-1 victory over Furman’s Margaret Bovette and Alex Moreno, while Marianne Jodoin and Alyssa Smith claimed an 8-1 win against Wake Forest’s Kasey Gardiner and Xue Zhang.
Mulholland and Scholl will face Clemson’s third-seeded tandem of Beatrice Gumulva and Jessy Rompies, while Jodoin and Smith will go up against second-seeded Havley Carter and Jamie Loeb of North Carolina. Both matches will start at 9:00 a.m.
Top-seeded and 27th-ranked Capra collected two singles wins on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals. A product of Ellicott City, Md., Capra posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kimmy Guerin of Wake Forest in the morning. She then knocked off 77th-ranked Katerina Popova of South Carolina, 6-2, 6-2. Capra will next go up against 100th-ranked Ashley Dai on Sunday.
A 78th-ranked senior from Varennes, Quebec, Jodoin also notched two singles wins and will have seventh-ranked Yana Koroleva of Clemson on the schedule for Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Jodoin totaled a 6-4, 6-4 win over Clemson’s Jessy Rompies in the second round, before totaling a three-set 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 victory over South Carolina’s Ximena Siles.
In Mulholland’s second round match versus South Carolina’s Elixane Lechemia, Mulholland dropped the first set 6-4, but came back to collect a 6-2 win, but fell in the final set 6-4. Fourth-seeded and 24th-ranked Mar couldn’t get past Tristen Dewar from Clemson, 6-7, 4-6 in the second round.
After totaling a 6-2, 6-0 win over Alice Garcia of Winthrop in the second round, 42nd-ranked Ester Goldfeld fell, 6-7, 1-6 in the round of 16 to Brigit Foland of South Carolina. Smith, who is a freshman from Laguna Niguel, Calif., produced an impressive 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 win over 109th-ranked Meghan Blevins of South Carolina in the round of 32 on Saturday. Smith then was downed 0-6, 1-6 to second-seeded Hayley Carter of North Carolina.
Sunday will feature the doubles quarterfinals, followed by singles quarterfinals and semifinals.
