CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – For the 12th time in school history and the first since 2007, the third-ranked Duke women’s golf team captured the team title at the 2013 Tar Heel Invitational on Sunday as the Blue Devils carded a 54-hole total of 857 to win by 11 strokes at the 6,285-yard, par 72 Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.

“It feels great,” commented Duke head coach Dan Brooks on the victory.  “We have been playing a tough golf course for three days and I’ve got a couple of players who were having to hit long clubs into the greens.  It was some of the smartest golf I have seen in a long time.  I am real happy for them.”

Duke turned in rounds of 286, 282 and 289 over the three days to finish with a season-best seven-under-par ledger, which was 11 strokes better than Vanderbilt (868).  Rounding out the top 10 teams were Oklahoma (871), Arkansas (874), Alabama (878), South Carolina (878), Clemson (878), Florida (881), Wake Forest (883) and Auburn (886).

The victory for Duke The Blue Devils featured three golfers in the top six of the final individual leaderboard – Celine Boutier (T3rd), Laetitia Beck (T3rd) and Yu Liu (6th).  Clemson freshman Ashlan Ramsey registered the individual win with a nine-under-par, 207.

“It is awesome to have the first one of the win of the season at UNC because obviously they are our rival,” said Boutier.  “We all played great so it feels real good.  It was really hard [course] because the course was really wet so the ball wasn’t going very far. ”

Boutier posted rounds of 73, 68 and 71 over the three days to finish with a season-best 54-hole total of 212, which was four-under-par.  She opened her round on hole No. 1 and after a birdie on the fifth hole the Montrouge, France product moved to one-under-par.  Boutier suffered her lone bogey of the day on No. 12, before closing the weekend with a birdie on the 18th to finish with a one-under-par, 71.  For the day, she hit 16 greens, all 14 fairways and had 33 putts.

Continuing her solid play with a tied for third place finish was Beck, with rounds of 69, 71 and 72.  It marks the second time in three tournaments Beck has registered all even or under par rounds.  She opened her round with a bogey on No. 1 but came back to total back-to-back birdies on the fifth and sixth holes to get to one-under-par.  Beck, who is out of Caesarea, Israel, closed the front nine with a bogey on No. 9 and played the final nine holes at even par with nine straight pars.  She hit 12 greens, 10 fairways and had 30 putts for her round.

Seeing action in her second collegiate tournament, Liu turned in her second consecutive top 10 finish as she was sixth with three straight rounds of 71 for a total of 213.  Liu, a native of Beijing, China, had another hot start to her round with birdies on No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 holes to get to three-under-par.  She collected her fourth birdie of the day on the 13th, but had three consecutive bogeys from 15-17 to drop back to one-under-par for the day.  Liu hit a team-best 17 greens, 12 fairways and had 34 putts on Sunday.  Her 11 birdies in the tournament ranked tied third.

Yu Liu would be a natural to do really well on a course like this because it was playing long and she hits it really hard,” said Brooks.  “She played real solid golf."

Freshman Sandy Choi carded rounds of 73, 72 and 75 over the three days to place tied 27th with a 54-hole total of 220.  A product of San Diego, Calif., Cho was held without a birdie on Sunday as she carded three bogeys on No. 2, No. 12 and No. 16.  She hit 14 fairways, 13 greens and had 34 putts in the final round.

Senior Alejandra Cangrejo struggled all three days on her way to finishing 95th overall with rounds of 80, 82 and 80.  It marked the worst finish of her four-year career with the Blue Devils.

Duke registered 37 birdies over the three days of play, while leading all teams with a 3.03 average on par threes.

Duke will next travel to Wilmington, N.C., to compete in the Landfall Tradition Oct. 25-27.
