DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke baseball team plated five runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back, routing MAAC foe Quinnipiac 16-5 Tuesday evening at Jack Coombs Field on the strength of a season-high 17 hits. The Blue Devils’ 16 runs marked the team’s highest scoring total since sending 17 across home plate April 9, 2013 against UNC Greensboro.

Six Duke (9-7, 1-2 ACC) players turned in multiple-hit performances, led by redshirt junior Mike Rosenfeld with three. Rosenfeld doubled with the bases loaded in the third, one of three Blue Devil hits with the bases loaded on the day, and amassed a career-high four RBI to go along with two runs scored.

Junior Matt Berezo, senior Jordan Betts, senior Mark Lumpa, junior Andy Perez and freshman Cris Perez also notched two hits apiece. Lumpa laced a pair of triples, going 2-for-3 while also drawing a pair of walks. In total, the Blue Devils racked up six extra base hits, including redshirt junior Chris Marconcini’s ACC-leading fifth home run in the bottom of the first.

Bobcat starter Gregory Egan (0-2) suffered the loss after permitting five runs on five hits without recording an out. The Quinnipiac (1-9, 0-0 MAAC) staff struggled to slow the Duke offense, issuing 10 walks as well.

“Sometimes when you’ve been scuffling a little bit offensively, it just happens this way where you break out offensively in a big way,” said head coach Chris Pollard. “I thought the at bat by [Aaron] Cohn in the first really set a tone. We followed it up with a number of great at bats. It was good for everybody to get that monkey off our back and see us square up some balls and see them fall in.” I thought we continued to play really good defense.”

Redshirt junior Aaron Cohn began the ball game with a base hit, which served as a catalyst for the Blue Devils. The first five hitters Duke sent to the plate all registered a hit, chasing Egan after the Marconcini home run and a Betts single.

Marconcini added a sacrifice fly in the second to put Duke on top 5-1 before Quinnipiac responded with three runs on two hits to start the third. Two hit batters and a walk aided the Bobcat offense prior to a strikeout concluding the frame.

With its lead narrowed to 6-4, Duke put six runs on the board in the third to break the game open. The Blue Devils notched four hits to go along with four walks in the inning.

A wild pitch and Rosenfeld RBI single plated a pair in the fourth before Duke scored its 15th and 16th runs on an Andy Perez two-run single in the seventh.

Redshirt junior Dillon Haviland (1-0) picked up the win, tossing 2.2 perfect innings in relief of starter Karl Blum. Blum threw 3.1 innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on four hits in his second career start. Freshman Kevin Lewallyn tossed two complete innings without allowing a baserunner and classmate Bailey Clark struck out the side in the ninth.

“In addition to all the great swings up and down our lineup and the really good approach offensively, the job that Dillon Haviland and Kevin Lewallyn out of the bullpen was very, very good,” Pollard added. “I liked the way Cris Perez came in in the start today, first start behind the plate and had really good at bats. I thought he managed the game well.”

Duke hosts Furman Wednesday at 4 p.m. before welcoming Notre Dame to Jack Coombs Field this weekend for the teams’ first meeting as ACC opponents.
