TULSA, Okla. – Four members of the Duke men’s tennis team were in action on the second day of pre-qualifying singles play Sunday at the 2013 Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships.
Two Blue Devils competed in the second round of the pre-qualifying stage after posting first-round wins Saturday in Tulsa. Playing in just his second collegiate tournament, freshman TJ Pura went up against 22nd-seeded Tommy Bennett of Rice in Sunday’s second round, falling by a 7-6 (5), 7-5 score. Sophomore Josh Levine took the first set against Nevada’s Moez Chargui in his second-round matchup but ultimately suffered a 5-7, 7-6 (2), 6-4 setback.
Redshirt junior Cale Hammond and sophomore Daniel McCall took part in bonus consolation matches Sunday evening, with Hammond cruising to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Matthew Campbell of Oklahoma State and McCall falling to 14th-seeded Tam Trinh of LSU, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 7-5.
Hammond will return to the courts this week along with senior Fred Saba in the qualifying stage of doubles play at the ITA All-Americans event. Singles qualifying matches begin Monday, Sept. 30 with sophomore Bruno Semenzato and second-seeded and 49th-ranked Raphael Hemmeler among those pre-qualified to the field.
