DURHAM, N.C. – Blue Devil freshman Caroline Hanan has been named a 2018 Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division I Scholar of Distinction, as announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Monday.

The Division I Scholars of Distinction program recognizes student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.9 or higher through the first semester of the 2018-19 academic year. A total of 140 student-athletes were honored this year.

A freshman back from Sugar Land, Texas, Hanan saw the field in 21 of 22 contests for the Blue Devils during the fall. She was part of a defensive unit that totaled eight shutouts on the season and ranked among the top 20 teams in the country in goals against average.

Sophomore goalkeeper Lydia Smeltz was also tabbed a Scholar of Distinction by the NFHCA, receiving the academic accolade for the second consecutive season.

A total of 14 Blue Devils earned spots on the 2018 Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad and, as a team, Duke was the recipient of a 2018 Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA National Academic Team Award.
