DURHAM, N.C. – In what came down to the last events for both sides, the Duke track and field team swept North Carolina in the Battle of the Blues on Saturday evening in Morris Williams Track & Field Stadium. As a team, the Blue Devils registered a whopping 42 personal bests, one school record and several other Duke all-time performances.

The women totaled 79 points, edging the Tar Heels who scored 75. The 4x400-meter relay was the clinching event for Duke, as the Blue Devils clocked a time of 3:36.06, nearly four seconds faster than North Carolina to take home the trophy. For the men, Ben Beatty’s toss of 16.11m in the shot put was enough for second-place, clinching the overall team score for Duke, 80-73.

“It was Duke versus North Carolina,” director of track & field Norm Ogilvie said. “Everyone at this school knows what that means. This is the first time we’ve had a dual against North Carolina since I’ve been here … it’s been 29 years in the making. This was the first time we beat both the North Carolina men and women so it’s a historic day for Duke track & field.”

For the women, India Lowe has been highly successful in the start of the outdoor season and today broke the school record in the women’s 400-meter hurdles with a first-place time of 57.58. Her time breaks Teddi Maslowski’s time of 58.35 set back in 2014 and is also an ACC qualifying performance.

In the women’s long jump, Kate Kutzer solidified herself in the record book, as she leaped to a personal best 5.92m, good for fifth all-time in Duke history. That result also registered as an ACC Outdoor qualifying score. Isabel Wakefield and Kelcie Simmons also earned personal best scores of 5.69m in the long jump.

Simmons also etched her name in the top-five all-time list in the women’s 100-meter dash, as she ran an ACC outdoor qualifying-and-personal-best time of 11.75, good for fourth in Duke history. Jaida Lemmons took third in the women’s triple jump, totaling a distance of 11.79m, good for fourth all-time in the Duke’s outdoor record book.

On the men’s side, Alex Miley etched his name on Duke’s all-time list by winning the 3000m steeplechase in a time of 8:59.11, the fourth-fastest time in Blue Devil history, and qualifies him for the ACC Championships.

Iyin Battle took first in the men’s hammer throw with a personal-best toss of 58.96m. His previous personal best of 57.77 stood second in school history, and his new mark is just shy of the Michael Foley’s record of 59.56 (2016). Beatty earned second behind Battle in the hammer throw, registering a personal best result of 52.11m. Battle and Beatty earned personal bests in the men’s discus, as Battle totaled a toss of 47.44m, while Beatty registered a throw of 39.11m.

Jacob Sobota tallied a new personal-best leap of 4.80m in the men’s pole vault, good for first-place out of eight competitors.

Two additional high points for the men and women were the performances of Charles Cooper and Brittany Aveni. Cooper captured first place in the 1500m in a time of 3:56.49 and followed up with a second-place personal-best 1:53.26 in the 800m. His eight individual points on the day were the most of any Blue Devil. Aveni won the 800m in a personal-best 2:06.49 and anchored the first-place 4x400m relay.

The men’s distance team outscored North Carolina 27-0 as they swept the 1500m, 3000m steeplechase and 3000m while the Blue Devil women also swept the 3000m in a key time for the meet, allowing Duke to claim the team title.

The Blue Devils will return to competition April 11-13 at the Tennessee Relays in Knoxville, Tenn.
