A long-time member of the Duke athletics department staff, Dr. Frank Bassett joined the Duke Medical Center in July of 1963 and later served as director of the Duke Sports Medicine Center from 1985-93.

A native of Hopkinsville, KY, Bassett was Duke's primary surgeon for all student-athletes. He is a founding member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and held the position of president of the organization from 1990-91.

While at Duke he was a professor of orthopaedic surgery and an assistant professor of biological anthropology and anatomy.

Dr. Bassett retired from the Duke medical department in January of 1994.
