HONOLULU – The Duke men’s tennis team started its spring campaign on a strong note Monday, taking on opponents from the University of Hawai’i as part of the Rainbow Warrior Classic. The Blue Devils played two rounds of doubles and one round of singles against the Rainbow Warriors and won six of eight doubles matches and seven of eight singles matches.

“I thought it was a great first day,” head coach Ramsey Smith said. “First matches can be a little bit tricky, especially for freshmen, but I thought our freshmen did well.  Overall, I’m really happy. It was a perfect start to this week.”

Freshmen Spencer Furman and Nick Stachowiak led the way for the Blue Devils with a 2-0 doubles record together and singles wins in their respective matches.

“I thought today was great for Spencer and Nick,” Smith continued. “Spencer was ready to go. Those two won both their matches 6-0 in doubles. They then followed up with great singles performances. That was awesome to see.”

Stachowiak and Furman earned 6-0 doubles sweeps versus Igor Kolaric and Chris Cajigan and Spencer Travalino and Fabian Woehrl. Senior TJ Pura and sophomore Jason Lapidus picked up two wins, topping Marcel Chan and Eric Kenneth 6-1 and then Felix Albert and Ruben Blattner, 6-3. Sophomores Vincent Lin and Ryan Dickerson finished off their two matches with a hard-fought 7-5 win against Travalino and Woehrland before coasting to a 6-2 victory over Kolaric and Cajigan.

Duke’s duo of freshman Robert Levine and sophomore Catalin Mateas suffered the two doubles setbacks, falling 6-3 and 6-4, before bouncing back with singles triumphs.

“We played great in three spots of doubles and one team didn’t play quite as well, but Catalin and Robert rebounded really well and played great in singles,” Smith added.

Getting off the singles court first was Furman, downing Blattner, 6-1, 6-0.

“The whole team came out firing,” Furman said. “I really fed off the energy of the other guys. I was just focused on one point at a time. I thought the energy we had in doubles gave me a lot of confidence in singles. I just tried to take that with me. I was very energized and ready to go.”

Dickerson was right behind, blanking Kenneth, 6-0, 6-0. Levine rebounded from his doubles performance with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph versus Kolaric. Stachowiak finished his first spring performance with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Chan.

The Blue Devils’ fifth singles victory came from Lin, who defeated Travalino 6-2, 6-3. Pura and Mateas finished at nearly the same time with Pura topping Woehrl 6-4, 6-4 and Mateas downing Albert 6-3, 6-3.

“I was really happy for Catalin to get that singles win,” Smith said. “He played well. He has really worked his way back and did some really good things today.”

The lone singles loss was by junior Andrew DeJoy, who dropped a 6-4, 7-5 decision to Cajigan.

Duke faces opponents from Ole Miss on Tuesday with first serve set for 2 p.m. ET.

“We have a lot of tennis as each guy still has six matches to play with four doubles and two singles,” Smith said. “It’s a great opportunity to get in a little bit of rhythm playing on consecutive days. We’re just trying to get a little bit better each day. Hopefully we build on today and get a little bit better tomorrow.”
