DURHAM, N.C. - With the top nine finishers in the meet, the Duke men’s cross country team opened the season with two victories, beating both Wake Forest and NC Central 15-50 in dual meet scoring at the annual Bull City Classic held in Durham, N.C. The overall scoring for the meet saw Duke take a meet low 15 points, with Wake Forest in second with 50 and NC Central finishing with 85. Duke’s record now stands at 2-0 overall and 1-0 in ACC competition.
With a strong freshmen class rearing to begin their collegiate careers, the weather forced a further delay of over an hour. However, when the Blue Devils finally took the track, the freshmen’s prowess showed. All five of Duke’s top finishers and scorers were making their collegiate debut. Leading the way was CJ Ambrosio who took his first collegiate win with a time of 18:07 on the six-kilometer course. Not far behind him were Paul Dellinger and Alex Miley who finished with times of 18:10 and 18:12 respectively. Michael Ungvarsky took fourth place with a time of 18:24 and Josh Romine rounded out the top five with a time of 18:28.
Next came a run of four sophomores for Duke. Cole Hoff took sixth place as he clocked a time of 18:33. Matt Wisner was seventh with a time of 18:55 and AJ Eckmann took eighth as he finished in 19:22. Rounding out the Duke runners was Adamson Bryant who had a time of 19:31.
Duke will return to competition at the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. on Saturday, Sept. 16.
