CARY, N.C. – For the second meet in a row, the Duke women’s cross country team’s top finishers were freshmen Amanda Beach and Michaela Reinhart. The pair helped the Blue Devils finish in second place at the Adidas Cross Country Invitational on Friday night at the WakeMed Soccer Park Cross Country Course in Cary.

The Blue Devils finished with 60 team points to finish in second place. NC State earned the win as the Wolfpack collected 20 team points.

After finishing in first and second place in their collegiate debuts, Beach and Reinhart were once again near the front of the pack. Beach was back among the pack early on, as the Melbourne, Fla., native was in tenth place after two kilometers. Beach turned up the speed late in the race though and finished the five-kilometer course in a time of 17:07.3 to finish in fourth place. Reinhart was next to finish after Beach, clocking a time of 17:12.4 to take fifth place, the same position she was in after two-kilometers.

“The freshmen class is exceeding my expectations,” said head coach Rhonda Riley. “Amanda and Michaela enjoying every minute of working together and being teammate and they are stride for stride.”

Next up for Duke was sophomore Sarah Armstrong and junior Kim Hallowes. The pair worked together to move up 12 spots each after the two-kilometer mark with Armstrong finishing in 17:43.2 to finish in 12th place and Hallowes was right behind her with a time of 17:44.6 for 13th place. Rounding out the scoring for Duke was junior Sheridan Wilbur who was the 30th finisher with a time of 18:09.3.

Freshman Leigha Torino and sophomore Veronica Brtek both contributed to the Duke effort. Torino was the 33rd finisher, clocking a time of 18:19.9. Brtek finished in 57th with a time of 19:07.9. Junior co-captain Olivia Gwynn rounded out the Duke runners as she finished in 59th with a time of 19:13.3.

The Blue Devils have a brief break from competition before racing again on Sept. 29, with the team splitting between the Paul Short Invitational and the Royals Challenge.
