DURHAM, N.C.—Five members of the Duke University men’s soccer team were selected to the All-ACC Academic Team as announced by the conference office Thursday. Cody Brinkman, Markus Fjørtoft, Carter Manley, Will Pulisic and Brian White each were recognized for their success on the field and in the classroom.
Duke’s five selections are tied with Notre Dame and Wake Forest for the most in the league. It is the second honor for the trio of Brinkman, Fjørtoft and White, while Manley and Pulisic earned the accolade for the first time. Pulisic was one of five freshmen selected and one of the seven goalkeepers honored.
The trio of Fjørtoft, Manley and White recently were selected in the first two rounds of the MLS SuperDraft. White was Duke’s top pick at No. 16 by the New York Red Bulls, while Manley closed out the first round as the 23rd selection by Minnesota United FC. Fjørtoft saw his name called in the second round by the Seattle Sounders.
All three were All-ACC and All-South Region selections this past season as Duke returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2011. White and Manley earned their degrees this past December, while Fjørtoft is pursuing a Master of Management Studies from Duke’s Fuqua School of Business. He earned his bachelor’s degree in May of 2017.
Brinkman, Duke’s man in the middle, completed his career as a four-year starter and is pursuing his final year of athletic eligibility with the Duke men’s lacrosse team. An electrical and computer engineering major, Brinkman will graduate in May.
Pulisic, one of two rookie goalkeepers in the ACC, played every minute for the Blue Devils this season. He finished the year with a 1.01 goals against average a .761 save percentage and seven shutouts. The seven clean sheets are the most by a Duke goalkeeper since 2013.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
