DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke men’s tennis team will host the ITA Carolina Regional this weekend at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. More than 128 competitors will be in action as the tournament stretches from Friday through Tuesday.

“The Cary Tennis Park, led by Sean Ferreria and Susan Bradley, is just incredible,” head coach Ramsey Smith said. “They are constantly making improvements to the facility and have seven indoor courts now. The stadium court is unbelievable and they are adding even more permanent seating around it. Cary Tennis Park is one of the premier facilities in the country and it’s 20 minutes from us. They are amazing at opening their doors to us and events like this.”

The singles and doubles winners from each of the 12 USTA/ITA regions advance to the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, held November 7-11, at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex in Surprise, Ariz.

Four Blue Devils will compete this weekend: freshman Robert Maciag, sophomore Sean Sculley, junior Spencer Furman and senior Jason Lapidus.

“I’m excited to watch our guys get out there and compete,” Smith added. “We’re behind in matches played so far this fall because of weather situations. This is a great event with all the top teams and players from North and South Carolina, which is one of the tougher regions."

Furman has the best fall record of any Blue Devil, playing to a 4-1 mark. He advanced through the ITA Men's All-American Championships prequalifying to reach the qualifying Round of 32. Maciag (0-1) and Lapidus (0-2) complete the Duke singles contingent.

“We have an older team,” Smith said. “We have a bunch of guys who are working hard. I’m happy with our practices so far. Right now we’re just missing some match play. We have done a lot of that at practice, but it’s never quite the same as when you actually get out there.”

Following this weekend’s qualifier event, the Blue Devils wrap up fall competition with the Wake Forest Fall Invite from November 9-11.
