DURHAM, N.C. – Duke men’s golfers Alex Smalley and Chandler Eaton capped an impressive weekend for the program with Eaton making the cut and placing in the top 60 at the U.S. Open and Smalley winning the Sunnehanna Amateur.

Eaton posted rounds of 72-70-73-74 on the famed Pebble Beach Golf Links, finishing at 5-over 289 for the championship – tied for 58th overall and the third-lowest amateur in the field behind Viktor Hovland (4-under) and Brandon Wu (1-over).

A Duke rising senior with dad Scott as his caddie, Eaton hit 71 percent of the fairways for the week (t-26th in the field), hit 61 percent of the greens in regulation (t-32nd) and was 20th in strokes gained putting (+1.07).

Eaton earned his spot in the U.S. Open by surviving a playoff in the local qualifier at the Duke Golf Club, then posting a top-four finish at the sectional qualifier at Hawks Ridge outside of Atlanta.

Smalley, who is two years removed from playing in the U.S. Open at Erin Hills, ran away from the field on Saturday to win the prestigious Sunnehanna Amateur at the Sunnehanna Golf Club in Johnstown, Pa., for the second consecutive year.

The recent Duke graduate fired a pair of four-under 66’s in the final two rounds to win the tournament by five strokes at 10-under par. Smalley became Sunnehanna’s first repeat winner since Rickie Fowler in 2007 and 2008.

Smalley (10-under) out-paced Oklahoma’s Garrett Rebrand (5-under), Yale’s James Nicholas (4-under) and Florida State’s John Pak (3-under) at the top of the leaderboard.
