DURHAM, N.C. – Former Duke linebacker Ben Humphreys was named the recipient of the University Scholar-Athlete award by the National Football Foundation’s Bill Dooley Chapter.

Humphreys, a Newport Beach, Calif., product, received four letters and a trio of Academic All-ACC accolades. He appeared in 47 career games with 36 consecutive starting assignments at linebacker to cap his career. During his four years in Durham, Humphreys registered 273 tackles, 27.5 tackles for loss, 9.0 quarterback sacks, 21 quarterback pressures, five pass breakups, five fumble recoveries, two caused fumbles and two interceptions. He finished with 10 or more tackles in nine games including a career-high 16 stops against Virginia Tech in 2016.

Humphreys is one of three defensive players in Duke history to start multiple bowl game victories (2015 Pinstripe & 2017 Quick Lane), joining defensive end Victor Dimukeje and safety Michael Carter II. On the Duke bowl game chart, Humphreys ranks fourth in career tackles with 17 and owns the quarterback pressure record with three.

As a senior, Humphreys was a finalist for the Lott IMPACT Trophy and Ninth Annual National College Football Award, presented by the Pop Warner Little Scholars. The 2018 honorable mention All-ACC pick was a semifinalist for the NFF William V. Campbell Trophy last fall. Humphreys was tabbed the ACC Linebacker of the Week following the Northwestern tilt, when he carded 15 tackles and 0.5 TFL. At the conclusion of the season, he was selected as the co-recipient of the program's Vincent Rey Award as Duke's most outstanding linebacker.

In his final game against North Carolina, Humphreys registered eight stops as Duke captured its third consecutive victory against the Tar Heels. During Duke’s 2018 victory at Miami, Humphreys carded six tackles, 0.5 TFL, two fumble recoveries, one caused fumble and one QB pressure as the Blue Devils won at Miami for the first time since 1976.

Other 2019 University Scholar Athlete award recipients for the Bill Dooley Triangle East Chapter of North Carolina included Zach Goins of North Carolina, Wilhelm Heinsen of N.C. Central, Alex Turner of East Carolina and Joe Sculthorpe of N.C. State.
