DURHAM, N.C. – Duke junior Chris Proctor has been named to the 2018 Johnny Bench Award Watch List as announced by the Great Wichita Area Sports Commission Tuesday. The prestigious award is given annually to the nation’s top NCAA Division I catcher.
In three seasons with the Blue Devils, Proctor has played in 105 games, starting 99. The Lawndale, N.C., native owns a .268 career batting average while fielding .999.
The initial watch list will be updated to include other candidates until April 30. The watch list is then narrowed down to a group of semifinalists, which will be announced May 16. From there, ballots will be sent to a national voting panel to determine the three finalists (announced June 4). A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 19th Annual Great Wichita Sports Banquet on June 28.
Proctor and the Blue Devils begin ACC play against Virginia this weekend at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
