DURHAM, N.C. –  For the first time since 2008, the Duke women’s golf team has moved into the No. 1 slot in the Golf World/Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Coaches’ Poll that was released on Wednesday.  The Blue Devils received two first place votes and a total of 633 points in a vote by 29 Division I head coaches.

Duke is coming off registering a second place finish at the Cougar Classic as the Blue Devils shot a seven-under-par, 281, from Sept. 9-11 in Charleston, S.C.  Duke collected two golfers in the top 10 as senior Lindy Duncan was second with a career-best nine-under-par, 207, while freshman Yi Xiao was tied for 10th with a two-under-par, 214.  Xiao, who is from China, became just the 10th Blue Devil freshman since 1989 to notch a top 10 finish in her first collegiate tournament.

Following Duke in the top 10 Golf World listing is Florida, Arizona State, USC, Arizona, Alabama, Vanderbilt, Auburn, Purdue and UCLA.  From 11-20 in the ranking is Virginia, Washington, Texas Tech, Georgia, Oklahoma State, Michigan State, N.C. State, Tennessee, Texas and Pepperdine.  Closing out the poll is California, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and UC Davis.

The Blue Devils are five-time NCAA Division I champions – 1999, 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007 – under head coach Dan Brooks, who is in his 29th season at Duke.

Duke will next compete in the NCAA Fall Preview from Oct. 5-7 at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
