Duke Opens 2013 Season at Home
The seventh-ranked Duke women's lacrosse team (0-0, 0-0 ACC) kicks off its 2013 slate Friday, Feb. 8 against Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Virginia Tech at 5 p.m. ... The Blue Devils also host Presbyterian Sunday, Feb. 10 at 3 p.m.

Virginia Tech Series History
Friday's contest marks the 16th all-time meeting between Duke and Virginia Tech ... The Blue Devils have never lost to the Hokies, sporting an all-time record of 15-0 ... Last season, Duke posted an 18-8 victory over Virginia Tech in Blacksburg ... Sophomore Taylor Trimble registered a career-high five goals in last year's meeting between the two teams.

Presbyterian Series History
Duke and Presbyterian will meet for the first time in series history Sunday ... The Blue Devils are 13-0 all-time against current Big South members.

Scouting the Blue Devils
Duke opens its 2013 slate against Virginia Tech Friday before hosting Presbyterian Sunday ... The squad is ranked seventh by the IWLCA and sixth by Inside Lacrosse's deBeer Media Poll to start the season ... The Blue Devils return eight starters and 24 letterwinners from last year's squad, which went 12-7 ... Sophomore Kerrin Maurer is Duke's top returning scorer after totaling 49 points (25 g, 24 a) in 2012 ... The Blue Devil offense also returns sophomore Taylor Trimble, who led the team with 28 goals last season, as well as junior Maddy Morrissey, who logged 25 goals and 10 assists for 35 points a year ago ... The defense will be bolstered by junior Taylor Virden, who was a second team All-South Region selection a year ago ... Duke head coach Kerstin Kimel, in her 18th season at Duke, welcomed seven freshmen to the program ... Two Blue Devils were named to the Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America Team with Virden and senior Lauren Martin garnering third team recognition.

Scouting the Hokies
Virginia Tech is coming off of back-to-back 10 win seasons for the first time in program history ... The Hokies concluded the 2012 campaign with a 10-7 record, highlighted by a 10-9 victory over then-No. 7 Virginia on April 7 ... Sophomore Megan Will returns for the Hokies after finishing second on the squad last season with 37 points and 30 goals ... Virginia Tech also returns senior goalkeeper Alex Gale, who posted a 16.15 goals against average and a .345 saves percentage a year ago.

Scouting the Blue Hose
Presbyterian compiled an overall record of 3-16 in 2012 with a 1-6 ledger in league contests ... Junior Catherine Ellis returns after leading the team with 54 points and 48 goals last season ... The Blue Hose will be one of eight teams to compete in the inaugural season of women's lacrosse in the Big South Conference in 2013.

Season Openers
Duke is 16-1 all-time in season openers ... The Blue Devils' lone loss in the first game of the season came in the program's inaugural 1996 season, a 12-7 defeat at the hands of Colgate on March 7, 1996.

Home Openers
The Blue Devils own a 15-2 record all-time in home openers ... Duke has won 12 consecutive home openers coming into the 2013 season ... The program's last home-opening loss came against Maryland, 14-10, on March 3, 2000.

Home Sweet Home
The Blue Devils have been tough to beat at Koskinen Stadium in recent years ... From 2007-12, the program notched a 48-10 record when playing at home, including 10-0 marks in both 2007 and 2011 ... Duke went 7-3 in home contests last season ... The Blue Devils' last home loss was a 12-3 defeat at the hands of then-No. 4 Maryland in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament on April 21, 2012 ... Duke is 118-38 all-time in home contests.

Starters Lost
Duke lost nine letterwinners and four starters from last year's team that reached the NCAA quarterfinals ... The departures include two of the Blue Devils' top point contributors from a season ago ... Kim Wenger was second on the 2012 squad in points (43), tied for second in goals (25) and ranked second in draw controls (50) while Emma Hamm was third in points (40), ranked second in assists (20) and led the team in draw controls (89) ... Duke must also replace starting goalkeeper Mollie Mackler, who finished her career with 382 saves and an 8.74 goals against average, as well as midfielder Kat Thomas, who was one of only seven Blue Devils to top both 100 points and 100 draw controls for a career.

In the Month of February
Duke has played 42 games all-time in the second month of the year and is 37-5 all-time during the month ... The Blue Devils last lost a February contest in 2012 against then-No. 1 Northwestern.

vs. Unranked Opponents
The Blue Devils are 98-11 all-time when facing unranked teams ... Duke has not lost to an unranked opponent since falling 14-13 in overtime to Towson on March 25, 1997 for a streak of 89 consecutive wins.

Against Ranked Opponents
Since the 2008 season, Duke is 37-32 against ranked teams ... The Blue Devils have lost just five times to teams ranked outside the top 10 in the past five years ... Duke is slated to face eight teams currently ranked in the preseason top 20, including four of the top eight ... The 2012 season saw the Blue Devils compile a 6-7 ledger against ranked teams.

ACC History
Duke is 37-25 all-time in ACC regular season games ... Over the past 10 seasons, Duke has gone 28-12 in ACC regular season games, second only to Maryland's mark of 30-10 in that span.

ACC Tournament
The 2013 ACC Tournament will be held in Chapel Hill, N.C., April 25-28 ... The Blue Devils will be seeking their second ACC title in program history and first since 2005.

NCAA Tournament
Duke will also be in the hunt for the program's 16th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2013 ... The Blue Devils own an all-time record of 17-15 in the tournament while making six trips to the national semifinals (1999, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011) ... Duke is one of seven schools with consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances of five or more years, joining Maryland (23), Virginia (17), Northwestern (9), North Carolina (8), Pennsylvania (6) and Massachusetts (5).

Seniors Kaitlin Gaiss, Mie Graham, Lauren Martin and junior Taylor Virden will serve as the team captains for the 2013 season.

Welcome to Duke
The Blue Devils' class of 2016 is comprised of seven freshmen from four states and includes Maddy Acton (Massachusetts), Kelsey Duryea (Massachusetts), Kaki Jennison (Virginia), Emma Lazaroff (Colorado), Jordan McCarthy (New Jersey), Claire Scarrone (New Jersey) and Kelci Smesko (New Jersey) ... The group was tabbed the No. 2 recruiting class in the country by Inside Lacrosse.

Preseason All-America
Two Blue Devils were named to the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook Preseason All-America teams ... Senior Lauren Martin and junior Taylor Virden each earned a spot on the third team.

Point Production
The Blue Devils return 64.4 percent of their point production from a season ago ... Sophomore Taylor Trimble is Duke's top returning scorer after totaling a team-high 28 goals in 2012 ... Classmate Kerrin Maurer led the Blue Devils in assists (24) and points (49) last season while junior Maddy Morrissey also returns after recording 35 points on 25 goals and 10 assists a year ago ... Rounding out Duke's double-digit scorers from last season are senior Makenzie Hommel (25g) and junior Molly Quirke (23).

Dynamic Duo Returns
Sophomores Kerrin Maurer and Taylor Trimble both return to the Duke offense in 2013 after leading the Blue Devils in several offensive categories last season ... Maurer led the squad in assists (24) and points (49) while Trimble was tops on the 2012 team with 28 goals ... The pair combined for 79 points on the season ... Maurer's 24 assists set a new mark in the program's freshmen record book, while her 49 points on the year were good for third on the freshmen single season chart ... Trimble finished fifth all-time among Duke freshmen with 28 goals.

Assists Leaders
Duke ranked second in the ACC in assists per game during the 2012 season, averaging 5.2 helpers per contest ... Sophomore Kerrin Maurer returns after leading the team and coming in fourth in the league in that category last year with 24 assists on the season ... Junior Maddy Morrissey also broke into double figures in the assists column during the 2012 campaign with 10.

Devilish Defense
Despite the loss of goalkeeper Mollie Mackler to graduation, several key members of Duke's defensive unit return in 2013 ... Junior Taylor Virden returns after earning second team All-South Region recognition last season ... Virden started all but one contest in 2012, totaling 29 draw controls, 23 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers ... Senior Lauren Martin is also back after recording 14 ground balls, 10 caused turnovers and five draw controls while starting 18 of 19 contests last season ... Sophomore Gabby Moise entered the starting lineup late last spring, notching four ground balls and six ground balls in eight games ... Moise received ACC Defensive Player of the Week recognition on April 10, 2012 after guiding the Blue Devils to a 12-11 victory over Boston College.
