DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University midfielder Zach Mathers' late-game heroics over the weekend earned the sophomore the first Ronald McDonald House Charities Duke Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the 2013-14 Duke sports season. Mathers finished the weekend with a pair of goals as Duke went 1-0-1 to win the John Rennie Nike Classic.
Heading into the final minute of action down 1-0 to Rutgers, Mathers found himself in the right spot at the right time and finished a rebound with 11 ticks remaining in regulation to help Duke tie the Scarlet Knights in its season opener. Two days later in the tournament’s finale, the Texas native broke open a scoreless game in the 72nd minute to lead Duke to the 2-0 victory over Northeastern.
Mathers is one of nine ACC players to register two goals on his opening weekend. The Blue Devils currently lead the conference in shots per game, while their 18 corner kicks are tied for second.
Duke opens ACC play this week when it travels to No. 14 Maryland. The Terrapins are coming off of a 0-1-1 weekend with a loss to California and tie at Stanford. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m., at Ludwig Field.
