DURHAM, N.C. – The 13th-ranked Blue Devils utilized 12 penalty corner opportunities and dominated time of possession to dispatch Longwood 3-1 Sunday, Sept. 29 at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium. The win comes on the heels of a thrilling 3-2 overtime shootout upset of top-ranked North Carolina Friday evening in Chapel Hill, completing a 2-0 weekend for Duke.

For the contest, the Blue Devils outshot Longwood 27-7 and held a 12-2 advantage in penalty corners. The victory moved the squad to 8-2 overall (1-0 ACC) while the Lancers fell to 3-7.

After earning its first penalty corner less than three minutes into the match, Duke struggled to find rhythm offensively until junior forward Jessica Buttinger put back a rebound off a penalty corner hit. The goal in the 21st minute marked Buttinger’s fourth of the season and gave Duke a 1-0 advantage heading into the locker room at halftime.

The Lancers tallied an equalizer early in the second period on an unassisted goal by Jessica Diaz. However, the Blue Devils locked down defensively after the score, with the team’s midfielders and defenders cutting off a number of looks by Longwood. Senior Brenna Rescigno reclaimed the lead for Duke in the 54th minute, converting on a penalty corner opportunity with assists from senior Emmie Le Marchand and junior Abby Beltrani.

Le Marchand tacked on a successful penalty stroke with 9:19 left on the clock to seal the 3-1 victory. The goal was the second of the weekend for the forward from Worchester, England, as Le Marchand tied the score with just over a minute remaining in regulation Friday night against the Tar Heels.

Coming off of a 22-save performance in the win over North Carolina, redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Blazing notched four saves against seven Longwood shots Sunday. The Lancers’ Kaye Goulding made 15 stops in the loss, while teammates Stacey de Grandhomme and Caitlin Smith provided defensive saves.

The Blue Devils continue their homestand next weekend, hosting California Friday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. and ACC opponent Wake Forest Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. Both contests will be streamed live on Inside Access.
