DURHAM, N.C. – In its first of two preseason exhibition games, the Duke men’s basketball team will host Bowie State in Cameron Indoor Stadium this Saturday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m. The game will be the first opportunity for the No. 4 Blue Devils to square off against a team other than themselves.
“We’ve been looking forward to this for about three or four months now,” said senior co-captain Tyler Thornton. “We’ve had a lot of great workouts, a lot of great practices, but it’s going to be nice to put that together against somebody else.”
Thornton is one of 10 returning letterwinners from last season’s squad, which went 30-6 and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight. Point guard Quinn Cook and shooting guard Rasheed Sulaimon are the lone returning starters, bolstering a unit that will also include Preseason ACC Rookie of the Year Jabari Parker and Preseason All-ACC selection Rodney Hood, who sat out last season due to NCAA transfer rules.
Bowie State finished 16-14 overall and 8-8 in the CIAA last season and returns two starters and eight letterwinners from last year’s team, including starting forward Carlos Smith and point guard Ray Gatling. Gating will see at least one familiar face when he enters Cameron Indoor Stadium, as he and Thornton squared off in the Washington, D.C., high schools ranks and played together with the DC Assault AAU program.
“We grew up playing against each other,” Thornton said. It’s going to be good to play against him at this level. It’s a blessing to see everything come full circle from when we were younger. We just had dreams, and now we’re living out our dreams on the college level. Now we’re just going to try and do our best out there on the court.”
The Bowie State exhibition will also air live through Blue Devil Network Plus on GoDuke.com. Blue Devil Network Plus will also provide free content from the game, including highlights, interviews, features, press conferences, and more.
