DURHAM, N.C. – Senior defender Taylor Virden garnered the fourth All-ACC Academic Women’s Lacrosse honor of her career to headline Duke’s five selections to the 2014 squad, as announced Monday, June 23 by Commissioner John Swofford.

The Blue Devils have placed 75 student-athletes on the All-ACC Academic Team since the award’s inception in 2006, marking the highest total in the conference. Under head coach Kerstin Kimel’s direction, Duke has landed at least five student-athletes on the team in each of the previous nine seasons.

Virden, a first team All-America selection by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association this spring, earned her fourth career nod on the all-academic squad, while senior midfielder Maddy Morrissey and junior midfielder Taylor Trimble were recognized for the third time in their respective careers. Senior attacker Sydney Peterson and junior attacker Kerrin Maurer rounded out the Duke contingent with their first appearances on the squad.

All eight of the league’s women’s lacrosse programs were represented on the All-ACC Academic Team, led by Syracuse’s seven selections which included 2014 ACC Women’s Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year Alyssa Murray. Duke and Virginia followed each with five student-athletes on team, while Boston College, Maryland and North Carolina each placed four on the team, Notre Dame had three and Virginia Tech two.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
