CHESTERTON, IND. -- Duke incoming freshman Adam Wood fired a closing round 66 to climb the leaderboard and claim medalist honors at the 2014 Northern Amateur. The Zionsville, Ind., native finished with a seven-under 209 for a two-shot victory at Sand Creek Country Club.

"It means a great deal to win a tournament where the majority of participants are college players," said Wood. "It proves that I belong in that level of competition and I look forward to competing with them in the future."

Wood opened third round play with three straight pars before moving into red figures with a birdie on No. 4. He added an eagle on the par 5 sixth hole and tacked on birdies on each of the next two holes to move to five-under.

A birdie on the par 5 10th pushed Wood to six-under before he fell back with bogeys on No. 12 and No. 15. He recovered quickly with a birdie on the par 3 16th and extended the pressure on the rest of the field when his birdie putt dropped on No. 18 to cap off a final round low of 66.

"Today I putted very well," said Wood. "I made several putts from long range and was also able to hit many greens. The combination of a hot putter and a high number of greens in regulation allowed me to post a low number."

Wood, who entered the day tied for sixth, then watched 36-hole leader Nick Grubnich enter the closing hole needing a birdie to force a playoff. Grubnich made bogey to send Wood home with the tournament title.

Wood got back into contention in the second round by carding four birdies and a bogey en route to a three-under 69.

He played the final 36 holes of the event at nine-under after carding just two birdies en route to a two-over 74 in the opening round.

Wood joins a list of Northern Amateur champions that includes PGA Tour veterans Bo Van Pelt and Duke grad Joe Ogilvie. Ogilvie won the event with a four-under 284 in 1993.
