CHARLESTON, S.C.—A group of five Duke University wrestlers saw its first collegiate action over the weekend at The Citadel Open. The Blue Devils competed in five different weight classes ranging from 125 to 197 pounds.

Alex Tanzman, Jose Abbate, Will Hahn, Spencer Neff and Tyler Patrick all competed unattached at the event, combining for a 14-10 overall record and four falls. Neff led all wrestlers with a fourth-place finish at 197 pounds.

Neff opened with three wins, including a sudden victory overtime triumph in his second match, move into the semifinals of the championship bracket. A narrow 4-0 decision to Jacob Dempsey from Life University sent the rookie into the wrestlebacks where he defeated Dalton Bailey of Life to earn a chance to wrestle for third place. Neff fell to Marshall Haas of host The Citadel to take fourth overall.

At 184 pounds, Patrick also posted a 4-2 record and advanced to the consolation quarterfinals. He registered a major decision, a technical fall and a fall on the day. His fall came just 50 seconds into the match, while he earned a technical fall over St. Andrews’ Janicento Williamson in his second consolation match. He closed out the day against Kendall Hemmings.

Tanzman and Hahn both ended the competition with 3-2 marks after winning their opening bouts at 125 and 149 pounds, respectively. Hahn started the day with consecutive wins before falling to Newberry’s William Melko in the wrestleback quarterfinals.

After falling to Joaquin Marquez of The Citadel in his second match, Tanzman rallied for two wins in the wrestlebacks. The rookie 125-pounder posted two pins on the day, including one in just 53 seconds.

Duke will compete with a full squad Sunday, Nov. 10 at the annual Hokie Open. The tournament will be the first action for the Blue Devils this season.
