Matt Skura has been named to the preseason Watch List for the Rimington Trophy, an honor given annually to the top center in college football.DURHAM, N.C. – Duke redshirt junior center
Skura, a 6-4, 305-pound native of Columbus, Ohio, returns as Duke’s starting center after starting all 14 games during Duke’s ACC Coastal Division championship season in 2013. Skura was the fulcrum of a Duke offensive line that ranked first in the ACC in fewest sacks allowed per passing attempt (27.8) and allowed the Blue Devils to score more than 25 touchdowns both on the ground and in the air for the first time in school history.
With Skura directing the offensive line, the Blue Devils established school single-season records for total first downs (298), offensive yards (5,966) and points (459) while helping Duke rank among the top half of the ACC in total offensive yards (426.1), scoring (32.8), rushing (178.0) and passing (248.1). Additionally, Duke converted nearly 70 percent of its fourth down attempts, and committed the 25th-fewest penalties per game in the nation.
The Rimington Trophy is named in honor of Nebraska center Dave Rimington, who was a two-time All-American and played in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles. Past winners of the Rimington Trophy include Barrett Jones (Alabama), David Molk (Michigan), Jake Kirkpatrick (TCU), Maurkice Pouncey (Florida) and Dominic Raiola (Nebraska).
Skura is one of 43 letterwinners returning to Duke in 2014 after helping the program to a 10-4 record, the ACC Coastal Division crown and a berth in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.
