DURHAM, N.C. – Duke freshman forward Jabari Parker was named one of 10 finalists for the Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Friday.
Parker has led No. 6 Duke to a 23-6 overall record and a 12-4 ACC record while ranking second in the conference with 18.8 points per game and first with 8.9 rebounds per game and 12 double-doubles. Parker is attempting to become the first Duke freshman to lead the team in both rebounding and scoring and would be only the 11th freshman in the ACC to accomplish that feat.
Also a finalist for the Oscar Robertson Trophy and Wayman Tisdale Award, Parker has logged a team-leading 15 20-point and 27 double-figure scoring games. He has played some of his best basketball against Duke’s top competition, posting averages of 19.3 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in Duke’s six contests against ranked opponents. Currently on a streak of four consecutive double-doubles, Parker recently poured in 19 points with 10 rebounds in a 66-60 win over No. 1 Syracuse on Feb. 22, and in his most recent outing posted 11 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, three blocks and three steals in a 66-48 win over Virginia Tech.
Parker is one of two ACC players on the Naismith finalist list, joining Syracuse point guard Tyler Ennis. He is also one of four freshmen to appear on the 10-player list, joining Ennis, Kentucky forward Julius Randle and Kansas guard Andrew Wiggins.
Duke has had seven winners of the Naismith Award, including J.J. Redick (2006), Jason Williams (2002), Shane Battier (2001), Elton Brand (1999), Christian Laettner (1992), Danny Ferry (1989) and Johnny Dawkins (1986).
Parker and the Blue Devils return to the court Wednesday, March 5, against Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. The game airs on ESPN2 and the Blue Devil IMG Sports Network.
