DURHAM, N.C. – With the start of the 2013 cross country season just weeks away, Track and Field News ranked the top-10 teams in the country, with Duke’s women’s team appearing as the number two overall.
This season, the team will look to improve upon last year’s seventh-place finish at the NCAA Championship meet. Last year’s finish was the highest placing for the women’s team since 2005.
The Blue Devils are returning the core of last year’s team, with five of the top seven runners remaining for the 2013 season. Although the contributions of Suejin Ahn and Madeline Morgan will be missed, the top-three Blue Devils from last year’s NCAAs, sophomore Kelsey Lakowske, fifth-year senior Juliet Bottorff, and junior Carolyn Baskir are returning to the team. In addition, senior Ashley Brasovan and senior Gabby Levac will look to round out the top-five for the squad.
Duke’s women’s cross country team will also welcome a number of highly touted incoming-freshman, including Wesley Frazier, Hannah Meier, Haley Meier, and Nicolette Sorensen.
The Blue Devils will open their season with the Bull City Classic at home against neighboring North Carolina Central University on August 31.
