DURHAM, N.C. – Six Duke student-athletes have been awarded the 2011 ACC Top Six for Service Award.  The Blue Devils receiving the honor are Rebecca Allen (women’s soccer), Ashley Brasovan (women’s cross country), Meghan Dwyer (women’s swimming), Miles Plumlee (men’s basketball), Robert Shofner (football) and Marcus Wright (men’s track & field).

The award goes to student-athletes at Duke who demonstrate dedication to community service and outreach programs.

Allen, a senior from Jenks, Okla., led all Duke student-athletes in number of visits to local schools for the popular Read with the Blue Devils program.  She handed out two assists as the Blue Devils went 11-8-4 last fall and advanced to the NCAA Tournament third round.

Brasovan, a sophomore from Wellington, Fla., participated in different community outreach events including Read with the Blue Devils, MLK Million Meals and the Active Teens Program.   She also served as an Oxford Housing host and played a key role in recruiting fellow teammates for multiple service projects.

Dwyer, a junior from Mission Viejo, Calif., was responsible for the recruitment and organization of student-athletes for monthly efforts with the Urban Ministries Soup Kitchen and also participated in Project Share.  One of Duke’s top individuals in the backstroke, Dwyer also was a member of the school’s 200-medley and 800-free relay teams in 2011 and helped the Blue Devils finish seventh at the 2011 ACC Championships

Plumlee, a junior from Warsaw, Ind., volunteered at a local elementary school throughout the year, serving as a role model and mentor.  He also participated in the Read with the Blue Devils program.  Plumlee helped the Blue Devils to a 32-5 record including the 2011 ACC championship by averaging 4.8 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.

Shofner, a freshman from Nashville, Tenn., helped deliver presents to the Durham community for the Project Share event, and also worked with the local Ronald McDonald House and Habitat for Humanity.  He also is part of the Duke football program that received the Community Service award from the school’s Environmental Management Action Committee.

Wright, a sophomore from Cheshire, Conn., assisted with the new partnership between Duke Athletics and BounceBack Kids, serving as an organizer, recruiter and volunteer for gameday events during the year.
