Junior Dominick DeMatteo covered the 8K course at Panorama Farms in a personal-best 24:43.19 to pace Duke, finishing seventh overall. DeMatteo was the Blue Devils' top finisher for the first time in his career. Senior Andrew Brodeur finished right behind DeMatteo in eighth, clocking a season-best time of 24:45.95, while sophomore Brian Atkinson rounded out the top 10 finishers overall with a personal-best time of 25:01.76.
Senior Josh Brewer took 16th at 25:13.93, followed by freshman Shaun Thompson (25:18.05) in 18th and senior Stephen Clark (25:22.64) in 20th. Freshman Morgan Pearson also scored for Duke, placing 21st in a time of 25:23.92.
"It was a very nice run for DeMatteo," said head coach Norm Ogilvie. "He was the No. 1 man for Duke for the first time in his career. Brodeur had a solid outing as well as our second runner and Brian Atkinson also had a strong race."
Duke posted a seven-man average of 25:00.58 and totaled 59 points to finish behind host Virginia at 39. UNC Greensboro came in third with 69 points, while Kentucky and Liberty rounded out the top five teams in the field of 10. UNC Greensboro's Paul Chelimo established a fast pace early on and completed the course in 23:36 to lead all runners.
With the second-place finish, the Blue Devils move to 30-10 on the season and 1-2 in ACC action.
"We need to get a little bit better as a group to finish where we want to finish at the ACC Championships," Ogilvie said.
The Blue Devils return to action on Saturday, Oct. 29 at the ACC Championships in Clemson, S.C.
