DURHAM, N.C. – The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced the Preseason Regional Rankings this afternoon, with Duke’s men’s cross country team ranked fourth out of fifteen teams in the Southeast Region. Comprised of seven Atlantic Coast Conference schools, the Southeast contains more ACC teams than any of the other eight regions.

Following a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championship meet last year, the Blue Devils are ranked one position higher entering the 2013 season. Duke ranks ahead of No. 5 North Carolina, No. 7 Virginia Tech, No. 12 Wake Forest and No. 15 Clemson. Only No. 2 Virginia and No. 3 N.C. State are ranked higher than Duke in the Southeast Region. Notre Dame is ranked third in the Great Lakes Region, Syracuse appears as No. 1 in the Northeast Region, and Florida State and Georgia Tech are ranked second and fourth respectively in the South Region.

The Blue Devils return five of the top seven finishers from last year’s NCAA Southeast Regional Championship meet, including seniors Mike Moverman, Christian Britto, Lucas Talavan-Becker and  Brian Atkinson and junior Shaun Thompson.

The men’s cross country team opens competition on Saturday, Aug. 31, in the Bull City Classic, against North Carolina Central. The meet is slated for a 3:45 p.m. start in Wallace Wade Stadium. The Blue Devils will then travel to Greenville, S.C. to compete in the Furman XC Classic on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 8:30 a.m.
