DURHAM, N.C. – With the release of the Coaches’ Preseason ACC Predictions on Thursday afternoon, the early conference favorites were evident, with Duke and Florida State receiving a combined 14 of the 15 first-place votes. The Blue Devils received 212 total points and six first-place votes, while Florida State led the preseason poll with 213 total points and eight first-place votes.
Conference newcomer Notre Dame, who received the final first place vote, also earned 188 points and placed third in the preseason poll. N.C. State garnered 174 points, good enough for a fourth-place position in the preseason poll, and Syracuse received an additional 167 points to round out the top five. Boston College, Virginia, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Pittsburgh and Miami filled the remaining ten rankings.
Duke concluded the 2012 cross country season with an 18-2 record against ACC opponents, with the only two defeats coming at the hands of the Seminoles at the ACC Championship meet and at the NCAA National Championship meet.
The Blue Devils, who finished second at last season’s ACC Championship meet, will miss the contributions of Suejin Ahn and Madeline Morgan, who finished 17th and 20th respectively in the race. Duke placed five runners in the top 25 at last year’s conference championship meet, and will look to both experienced upperclassmen and talented freshmen to continue the success of last season.
The 2013 ACC Championship meet is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 1 in Kernersville, N.C.
