DURHAM, N.C. – Duke’s men’s cross country team opened the 2013 season with a convincing win against crosstown rival N.C. Central in the second annual running of the Bull City Classic. The Blue Devils placed six runners ahead of N.C. Central’s first finisher, resulting in a 15-45 final victory for Duke. This marks the fifth consecutive year the Blue Devils swept the Eagles.

Fielding a young team, Duke’s men’s head cross country coach Norm Ogilvie was pleased with the result.

“It was great to see a freshman win the whole thing. He had fantastic high school credentials. Over the shorter distance, his leg speed won out over some of the strength of our sophomores. Frankly, I was very pleased with both Stephen and William Hague. William Rooney and Blake Udland also ran fairly fast.”

Freshman Stephen Shine led the Blue Devils in the first collegiate race of his career, covering the 6-kilometer distance in a time of 19:11, followed closely by sophomore William Hague, who turned in a 19:15 performance. Fellow sophomores William Rooney and Blake Udland finished third and fourth respectively, in times of 19:27 and 19:34. Freshmen Weston Carvalho and Aaron Liberatore also donned the Duke singlet for the first time, recording times of 20:32 and 20:47 respectively, good enough for fifth and sixth-place in the race.

The race was officially started by honorary starter Vice President and Director of Athletics Kevin White. The two teams ran one lap in Wallace Wade Stadium before leaving the track and taking to the trails for the remainder of the course, before crossing the finish-line on the Sally Meyerhoff Fitness Loop.

Duke’s men’s cross country team will travel to Greenville, S.C. Saturday, Sept. 14 to participate in the Furman XC Classic. The meet will mark the start of the season for the entire Blue Devil roster. The meet is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. start.
