Duke Records 10th-Place Finish at Blue Ridge Open

BOONE, N.C. – Duke’s 17th-ranked women’s cross country team placed 10th out of 27 competitors on Friday afternoon at the Blue Ridge Open in Boone, N.C. Duke fielded six runners and averaged 19:35.84 over the 5,000-meter State Farm Fields cross country course.

After running a personal-best time at the Royal Cross Country Challenge Oct. 11, senior Dana Morin led the Blue Devils Friday with a 13th-place finish. The Sheridan, Wyo., native ran a time of 18:37.57 in her third competition of the season.

Fellow senior Colette Whitney, in her second meet of the season, crossed the line in 48th place and clocked a time of 19:19.54. The finish marks the second competition this season Whitney scored for the Blue Devils.

Sophomore Allison Sturges raced to a 68th-place finish at the Blue Ridge Open and finished third on Duke’s squad.  Sturges ran a time of 19:35.07 and placed in Duke’s top five for the second consecutive meet.

The freshman pair of Grace Chang and Gina Daniel finished 72nd and 139th, respectively. Chang clocked a 19:40.06, following a personal-best performance at the Royal Cross Country Challenge one week earlier. Daniel covered the distance in a time of 20:46.92.

Junior Lindsey Olivere rounded out the Duke competitors, running a time of 20:46.92 and finishing 141st. Olivere participated in her second competition of the season. Olivere finished 31st at the Adidas XC Challenge Sept. 20, finishing in a time of 18:45.8.

The Blue Devils return to action Saturday, when 12 runners will toe the line at the fifth running of the Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, Wis. The women’s championship race is slated for a 12 p.m. start.
