DURHAM, N.C. – With the Duke women’s cross country team ranked fourth in the ACC preseason poll, released by the league office Thursday, the Blue Devils once again open the cross country season ranked among the conference’s top third. Florida State received all but two of the first-place votes to garner the top spot in the preseason poll.
Joining Florida State and Duke in the top five are No. 2 Virginia, No. 3 Syracuse, and No. 5 North Carolina. Notre Dame ranked just outside the preseason top-five, while No. 7 NC State, No. 8 Virginia Tech, No. 9 Boston College, No. 10 Wake Forest, No. 11 Louisville, No. 12 Clemson, No. 13 Georgia Tech, No. 14 Pitt and No. 15 Miami round out the early-season rankings.
At last season’s conference championship, Florida State won the team title, while Virginia and Syracuse placed second and third, respectively. ACC newcomer Notre Dame earned a fourth-place finish, while Duke posted a fifth-place showing.
Duke brings back six of the team’s nine competitors from last year’s conference team, including three of the squad’s top five finishers. Sophomores Haley Meier and Hannah Meier, juniors Madison Granger and Colleen Schmidt and seniors Julianna Miller and Kelsey Lakowske all return to the Duke lineup this fall.
The Blue Devils travel to Charlottesville, Va., Friday for the season-opening contest at the Virginia Duals.
