DURHAM, N.C. – Duke women’s lacrosse head coach Kerstin Kimel welcomed the addition of 11 players to the Blue Devil program this fall, with 10 freshmen and one transfer student joining the squad for the 2014 campaign.

Devon Russell
Midfield/Defense l Chester, N.J. l West Morris Mendham

Prior to Duke: Russell completed her prep career at New Jersey’s West Morris Mendham, leading the squad to the Morris County championship as a sophomore and the New Jersey Group III finals all four years. She recorded a career-best 26 goals as a senior to earn second team all-county and all-conference recognition. A US Lacrosse Academic All-American, Devon also helped her high school team capture four sectional titles and earn a top 10 ranking in the state and a spot in the national rankings each year.

What is your favorite lacrosse memory?
DR: Beating Chatham in the Morris County finals my sophomore year.

When did you start playing lacrosse?
DR: I started lacrosse my freshman year. I was going to run track, but my older friends pushed me into trying lacrosse. The first time I picked up a stick was a week before tryouts and I could hardly catch or throw.

Who has had the biggest impact on your life?
DR: My twin sister Paige. We’ve done everything together and have pushed each other to be better people and athletes along the way.

Pre-game ritual/superstition: I’m obsessed with foam rolling so during our whole pre-game I’d doing that or I feel like I’m not ready to play.
What do you plan to major in? Public Policy with a degree in Marketing and Management
If you were to play another sport, what would it be? Soccer. That was my main sport growing up, and although I had to stop playing, I never stopped loving the sport.
Hidden talent: Photography
Best advice you’ve received: “Don’t count the days, make the days count.”
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I see myself pursuing my career in marketing and hopefully traveling around the world as a part of my job.
