DURHAM, N.C. – Ninth-ranked Duke was selected to the NCAA Championship field for the 17th consecutive season and will face No. 19 Stanford in the first round Friday, May 9 at 4 p.m. in South Bend, Ind.

Duke and Stanford have faced off six times in program history with the Blue Devils leading the series, 6-0 ...  The two teams last met Feb. 17, 2008, with Duke winning by a 16-9 score ... The Blue Devils are 3-0 all-time against the Cardinal in neutral site contests ... The teams have not previously met in NCAA Championship action.

Last Time We Met
Duke used a late first-half surge to power past Stanford, 16-9, Feb. 17, 2008 at Westcott Field on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas ... Down 5-4 late in the first period, the Blue Devils scored six unanswered goals spanning halftime to take a lead they would not relinquish ... The contest marked the first Division I women’s lacrosse game to be played in the state of Texas ... Carolyn Davis led all scorers with three goals and three assists while Megan Del Monte added three goals and two assists.

Duke in the NCAA Championship
The Blue Devils earned the program’s 17th consecutive selection to the NCAA Tournament field ... Duke is 19-16 all-time in the tournament while making six trips to the national semifinals (1999, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011) ... The Blue Devils are one of five programs with consecutive appearances of 10 or more years, joining Maryland (25), Virginia (19), Northwestern (11) and North Carolina (10) ... Under the direction of head coach Kerstin Kimel, the program is 12-3 all-time in first round play.

Duke vs. the MPSF
The Blue Devils are 14-0 all-time against teams from the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation ... Duke last faced a team from the MPSF in 2011, defeating Saint Mary’s by a 23-2 score.

Scouting the Cardinal
Stanford has compiled a 14-4 season ledger and finished as the runner-up in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament with a 14-11 loss to Denver in the final ... The Cardinal is ranked 19th in this week’s IWLCA Coaches poll... Rachel Ozer paces the attack with 45 points (32g, 13a) while Hannah Farr, Kelsey Murray and Lucy Dikeou have also topped the 40-point mark ... Farr leads the team in draw controls (40) and Megan Lerner is second (38) ... In goal, Lyndsey Munoz owns an 9.02 goals against average to rank 30th in the country.

Scouting the Blue Devils
Duke (9-7, 3-4 ACC) suffered a 7-5 setback to Virginia in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championship Apr. 24 ... The Blue Devils were ninth in the latest IWLCA Coaches Poll ... Junior attacker Kerrin Maurer guides the offense with 48 goals and 26 assists while senior Sydney Peterson is second with 38 points and sophomore Kelci Smesko is third with 37 points ... Returning All-American defender Taylor Virden leads the way in draw controls (56) and caused turnovers (22) ... Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea, a second team All-America selection last spring, owns a 9.81 goals against average and a .428 save percentage in the net ... Duke’s balanced attack is outscoring opponents by a 207-156 margin. 

Last Time Out
The fourth-seeded Blue Devils generated 25 shots and held fifth-seeded Virginia scoreless for nearly 23 minutes in the first half but struggled at the draw in a 7-5 loss to the Cavaliers in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championship Apr. 24 at Boston College’s Alumni Stadium ... Virginia won all seven draws in the second half and held an 11-3 advantage in the category for the game ... Senior Taylor Virden led the defensive effort with three caused turnovers and two ground balls on the day.

Scheduling the Best
Duke’s 2014 slate currently features nine teams ranked in the top 20 of the latest IWLCA Coaches Poll ... The Blue Devils earned wins over No. 3 North Carolina (Apr. 16), No. 14 Virginia (March 22) and No. 18 Louisville (Feb. 9).

Duke in the National Landscape
In the May 5 edition of the NCAA’s Division I team statistics, the Blue Devils ranked 19th nationally in scoring offense with an average of 12.94 goals per game ... Duke also ranked among the top 30 teams in the country in scoring margin (26th, 3.19gpg), draw controls (28th, 12.94/gm) and points (29th, 299).

Maurer Quarterbacking the Offense
Junior attacker Kerrin Maurer is once again one of the Blue Devils’ most dependable playmakers up front ... She leads the team this spring in points (74), goals (48) and assists (26) and ranks second in draw controls (48) ... The Setauket, N.Y., native ranked second in the ACC and seventh nationally in points per game entering the week ... Maurer was also third in the conference and 12th nationally in scoring at 3.00 goals per game ... She tallied a career-high six goals in the season opener against Elon (Feb. 7) and has matched her career-best single game output of eight points twice this season ... She notched a pair of five-goal performances against Louisville (Feb. 9) and Notre Dame (Apr. 11).

Balanced Attack
Fifteen different Blue Devils have scored a goal and 14 players have notched at least one assist this season ... Twelve Blue Devils have recorded multiple-goal games, led by junior Kerrin Maurer, who owns eight hat tricks ... In a 25-4 season-opening victory over Elon Feb. 7, 14 different Duke players found the back of the net with Maurer tallying a career-high six markers.

Virden Quick on the Draw
Duke is 7-3 this spring when winning the draw controls category ... Senior defender Taylor Virden has been scrappy on the wings, leading the team with 56 draw controls ... She ranked seventh in the ACC in draws entering the week ... Virden won a career-high six draws last season against Vanderbilt (March 2, 2013) and matched that total with six against Virginia (March 22) ... The Ellicott City, Md., native moved into second on Duke’s all-time list for career draw controls against Syracuse (March 29) and owns 178 over her four seasons.

Maurer Climbing Single-Season Charts
In her third season, junior attacker Kerrin Maurer continues to etch her name into the program record books ... The Setauket, N.Y., native’s team-leading 48 goals this spring tie her for 10th on Duke’s single season chart ... Maurer is also tied for 10th on the Blue Devils’ single season list for assists (76) and tied for 12th in points (74) ... Senior defender Taylor Virden comes in at sixth on the single season chart for draw controls with 56 this spring.

Blue Devils Moving Up Career Lists
Senior defender Taylor Virden and junior attacker Kerrin Maurer provide veteran experience at both ends of the field ... Maurer is currently tied for third in program history in career assists (85) and ranks ninth in career points (193), while junior Taylor Trimble is 20th all-time in points   (106) after reaching the 100-point mark against Syracuse (March 29) ... Virden ranks second all-time in career draw controls with 178 ... She reached the 100-ground ball mark for her career against Virginia (March 22), becoming the 26th player in Duke history to achieve the feat.
