DURHAM, N.C.- The Duke women's lacrosse team closes out its regular season Saturday at noon against Penn. Recently, GoDuke.com sat down with senior Amanda Jones to learn more about the Maple Glen, Pa., native.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite restaurant in Durham?
Amanda Jones: Vin Rouge. I like the salmon with mashed potatoes and the fries are really good, too. I'm a really big food person. I'm the one on the team that's always finding the random, really good ones. Bull City Burgers is really good, too.
GoDuke.com: Who would play you in a movie?
AJ: I'm a huge fan of Kate Hudson and Reece Witherspoon ... not because they look like me or act like me at all. I really like all of their work and I like their style as well.
GoDuke.com: What is your worst habit?
AJ: I would say I play with my hair a ton. Other than that, I go on Facebook a little bit too much and everyone knows it.
GoDuke.com: Can you cook? What are you good at?
AJ: I can. I don't know how good I am. Grilled cheese is probably my specialty. When it comes to cooking, I usually go to Kat Thomas for that one. I think everyone has heard how good of a cook she is.
GoDuke.com: Who has had the most impact on your life?
AJ: Obviously I would say my parents and my two brothers, but as I'm coming down to graduation, I would say my teammates through the years. My freshman year, I had amazing upperclassmen ... when you think on the lacrosse field and off, Caroline Cryer, and we had a great senior class with Germ and McBride, Del Monte ... just girls like that show you what it means to be a Duke lacrosse player and a Duke student-athlete. Through the years, you're constantly learning from underclassmen, and the girls in my grade especially. We're a very close class and they've had the biggest influence on me through past four years.
GoDuke.com: Where do you like to study on campus?
AJ: I'm not too big of an on campus person, but I guess Bostock or Perkins. I sometimes like to go to Lily actually on East Campus. I don't know anyone there anymore - it's all freshmen - so I can't socialize even if I want to. That's been my go to this year at least.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite home-cooked meal?
AJ: My mom makes great spaghetti and meatballs. I'd say growing up, my favorite was steak, mashed potatoes and cooked asparagus. I have to say, I'm a huge surf and turf fan. We're a beach family, so I've always grown up with lobster, clam chowder, stuff like that.
GoDuke.com: What's the biggest obstacle you've had to overcome?
AJ: Lacrosse-wise, it's kind of finding your role through every year. Every year I've had a different role. Freshman year, I really embraced being on the role-playing team and helping our starters prepare by playing other teams starters, so I like to say I've been an All-American all four years because I've had quite the repertoire from all the different teams. Every year, you have to accept but kind of mold yourself into how you can best benefit the team in general.
GoDuke.com: What's on your bucket list?
AJ: Now that I have a week left [of classes], I have a lot. My mom says it's quite an expensive one. I really want to do golf lessons at the Washington Duke because I wasn't able to take the class, so I've been golfing. Lauren Martin and I have decided we want to play tennis at least once a week. Just been trying to do all the random things, the farmer's market ... I ate at the Nasher which I never have before. A lot of them include food actually when I think about it.
GoDuke.com: What embarrassing music do you have on your iPod?
AJ: A mix of everything. I would like to say nothing's embarrassing. I have a lot of classic rock and I guess sometimes some Disney Classics will come on that aren't considered cool.
GoDuke.com: Who would be your dream date?
AJ: He's a fictional character, but I would say Tim Riggins from Friday Night Lights.
GoDuke.com: What's your favorite movie?
AJ: I'm pretty versatile. I really like Three Ninjas because my brothers have influenced me. Sound of Music because I randomly used to do musicals. Three Ninjas, Goonies, Sound of Music and The Patriot because it's my dad's favorite movie and I was forced into liking it and now I love it.
GoDuke.com: Describe your coach in one word.
AJ: Versatile. I was thinking about it for a while and I think that's the best one because she's capable of doing a lot of different things: she's able to be our mom, our friend, our coach. She's always harping us to take our vitamins and get our flu shots, but then she's making sure we're doing our best in the classroom. One of the things I love the most, and the reason why I came here, is because she always emphasizes we need to have a college life. We need to do everything that will let us have the best college experience and not just play lacrosse or be in the classroom. She understands that very well.
