DURHAM, N.C. – Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea received the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week accolade for the second time this month Tuesday, as announced by the conference office.
Duryea improved to 5-0 in the cage this spring as sixth-ranked Duke topped No. 9 Virginia, 13-7, in ACC action Saturday at the Cavaliers’ Klöckner Stadium. The rookie from Beverly, Mass., matched a season-high with 12 saves and picked up two ground balls in the win. Duryea also anchored a defensive unit that held its opponent to single-digit scoring for the third consecutive game and sixth time overall in 2013.
Following Saturday’s victory at Virginia, Duryea leads all goalkeepers in the ACC with a .557 save percentage and ranks seventh in goals against average with an 8.55 clip. She also tops the league in saves per game with a 9.83 average in six appearances.
Duryea and the Blue Devils face another tough ACC opponent this week as they host No. 3 North Carolina Thursday at 7 p.m. from Koskinen Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on the ACC Digital Network.
