No. 8 Duke Makes 13th Appearance in NCAA Quarterfinals
Eighth-ranked Duke (14-5, 2-3 ACC) will face Maryland for the second time this season Saturday, May 18 at 12 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament in College Park, Md. … The Blue Devils advanced in the tournament after dispatching Navy by a 10-5 score last Sunday in the tournament’s second round … Top-seeded and top-ranked Maryland (20-0, 5-0 ACC) topped Stony Brook, 11-3, Sunday to reach the quarterfinals.

Maryland Series History
Saturday’s NCAA quarterfinal contest marks the 26th all-time meeting between Duke and Maryland with the Terrapins holding a 16-9 advantage in the series ... The two ACC squads met earlier this season, with Maryland claiming a 15-6 victory in College Park on Feb. 24 ... The Blue Devils are 1-1 in program history when facing Maryland in the NCAA Tournament.

Last Time We Met
Down 9-2 at intermission, Duke opened the second half on a 4-1 run but came up short in a 15-6 loss to the Terrapins Feb. 24 in the ACC opener for both teams ... Sophomore Kerrin Maurer paced the Duke attack with five points on three goals and two assists ... Senior Kaitlin Gaiss and freshman Kelsey Duryea split time in goal, with Duryea posting eight saves in her collegiate debut ... Maryland’s Brooke Griffin tallied three markers  while four other Terrapins notched two goals apiece ... For the game, Maryland outshot the Blue Devils, 32-17, and won the ground ball battle, 15-5 ... Duke held the advantage at the draw (13-11), led by three from junior Taylor Virden.

Scouting the Terrapins
Top-seeded and top-ranked Maryland (20-0) cruised past Stony Brook, 11-3, in the NCAA Tournament second round last Sunday in College Park ... The Terrapins captured their fifth consecutive ACC Tournament title in late April ... Tewaaraton Award finalist Alex Aust leads the team and the ACC in scoring with 112 points on 62 goals and 50 assists ... Teammate and fellow Tewaaraton finalist Katie Schwarzmann has registered 76 points (52g, 24a) while Taylor Cummings paces Maryland at the draw with 82 for the spring ... Goalkeeper Kasey Howard tops the ACC with a 8.09 goals against average and is 19-0 in the cage this season.

Scouting the Blue Devils
Eighth-ranked Duke (14-5, 2-3 ACC) reached the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals for the 13th time in program history with 10-5 victory over No. 16 Navy last Sunday in Annapolis ... Sophomore Kerrin Maurer leads the team in points (66) and assists (31) while senior Makenzie Hommel (44) and sophomore Taylor Trimble (36) are the squad’s top goal scorers ... Maurer ranks second in the league in assists per game (1.63) and fifth in points per game (3.47) entering the quarterfinal matchup ... Junior Taylor Virden ranks second on the squad and is tied for third in the ACC with an average of 1.72 ground balls per contest and moved into sixth on the program’s all-time draw controls list with 119 for her career ... Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea is 10-4 this spring and leads the conference with an average of 8.60 saves per game, a .506 save percentage and an average of 2.20 ground balls per contest.

Last Time Out
Five different Blue Devils registered goals and the Duke defense held eighth-seeded Navy scoreless for over 40 minutes en route to a 10-5 victory over the Mids last Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament ... Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea reached double digits in the saves column with 10 while she and junior midfielder Molly Quirke picked up three ground balls apiece ... The Blue Devils featured a balanced attack on the afternoon, with freshman Kelci Smesko totaling five points (3g, 2a), sophomore Taylor Trimble four (3g, 1a) and sophomore Kerrin Maurer three (2g, 1a).

Duke in the NCAA Tournament
Duke earned the program’s 16th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2013 ... The Blue Devils own an all-time record of 19-15 in the tournament while making six trips to the national semifinals (1999, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011) ... Duke is one of seven schools with consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances of five or more years, joining Maryland (24), Virginia (18), Northwestern (10), North Carolina (9), Pennsylvania (7) and Massachusetts (6) ... The honor marks the first All-America distinction for both players, with Virden garnering first team accolades and Duryea taking home second team honors ... Virden is the first Blue Devil defender to be selected for IWLCA All-America accolades since Aiyana Newton earned the distinction in 2008 ... Maurer ranks fifth in the ACC and is tied for 58th nationally with an average of 3.47 points per contest entering the tournament quarterfinals ... She is also second in the conference and tied for 27th nationally in assists (31) ... Hommel ranks fourth in the league and 36th in the country, sporting an average of 2.75 goals per game ... She also leads the team in hat tricks with nine ... Both Hommel and Maurer have garnered ACC Offensive Player of the Week honors this season.

Scoring Streaks
Sophomore Taylor Trimble has registered a point in a career-best 14 consecutive contests entering Saturday’s NCAA quarterfinal game against Maryland ... Trimble has also scored multiple goals in five out of the Blue Devils’ last six contests ... Sophomore Kerrin Maurer has tallied a point in each of the last six contests while junior Maddy Morrissey has recorded a point in five consecutive outings.

Attack Duo Moving Up Career Lists
Senior Makenzie Hommel and sophomore Kerrin Maurer have both enjoyed successful seasons ... Hommel has registered a team-high 44 goals to go with 10 assists for a total of 54 points, while Maurer owns 35 goals and leads the team in assists (31) and points (66) ... Hommel surpassed the 100-point mark for her career with a two-goal performance against Boston College (Apr. 6) ... Maurer reached the 100-point barrier with a five-point performance against Davidson (Apr. 17) and topped the 50-assist milestone in a win over Ohio State (Apr. 20) ... Maurer currently ranks 10th on the program’s all-time career assists chart with 55 in just two seasons.

Maurer Climbing Single-Season Charts
In just her second season, sophomore attacker Kerrin Maurer continues to etch her name into the program record books ... The Setauket, N.Y., native’s team-leading 31 assists this spring rank sixth on Duke’s single season assist chart, up six spots from a year ago ... Maurer also comes in at tied for 18th on the Blue Devils’ single season list for points with a team-high 66 points in 19 contests.

Virden Quick on the Draw
Duke is 9-1 this spring when winning the draw controls category ... Junior defender Taylor Virden leads the squad with 51 draw controls this spring for an average of 2.83 per game to rank fifth in the ACC in that category  ... The Ellicott City, Md., native won a career-best six draws earlier this season against Vanderbilt (March 2), and has registered three or more draws in 10 games overall ... Virden is tied for sixth on Duke’s all-time list for career draw controls with 119 in three seasons.

Duryea Maturing Quickly in the Cage
Freshman Kelsey Duryea has been solid in the net since making her first appearance in the second half against Maryland on Feb. 24 ... Duryea has started all 14 contests since then, ranking fourth nationally in save percentage and 15th in saves per game ... The Beverly, Mass., native was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this spring on Apr. 23 following a pair of wins against Davidson and Ohio State ... Duryea recorded a season-high 15 stops against North Carolina on March 28, making her one of just four netminders in program history to notch 15 or more saves in a game.

Six Blue Devil freshmen have seen the field this season with Maddy Acton, Kelsey Duryea and Kelci Smesko entering the starting lineup ...
