DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women’s lacrosse team led the Atlantic Coast Conference with eight selections to the 2013 All-ACC Academic Women’s Lacrosse team, as announced Wednesday, June 26 by Commissioner John Swofford.
The Blue Devils have placed 70 student-athletes on the All-ACC Academic squad since the award’s inception in 2006, marking the highest total in the conference. Under head coach Kerstin Kimel’s direction, Duke has also landed eight-plus student-athletes on the team in each of the previous eight seasons, including a program-best 10 in 2011.
Senior attacker Makenzie Hommel, sophomore midfielder Taylor Trimble and junior defender Taylor Virden were three of seven ACC players to receive both all-conference and all-academic team recognition in 2013.
Virden, an Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association first team All-American this spring, earned her third career nod on the all-academic squad, as did junior midfielder Molly Quirke. Hommel and Trimble were joined by senior defender Lauren Martin and junior midfielder Maddy Morrissey in garnering their second all-academic selections, while sophomore attacker Brigid Smith and freshman attacker Maddy Acton rounded out the Duke contingent.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
