DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University junior Kerrin Maurer and senior Taylor Virden have been selected the ACC Women’s Lacrosse Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, as announced Tuesday, Apr. 22 by the conference office.

The pair of Blue Devil upperclassmen guided Duke to a 7-6 overtime victory against then-No. 3 North Carolina last week, helping the squad secure the No. 4 seed in the upcoming ACC Championship.

Maurer, an attacker from Setauket, N.Y., netted the game-winning goal with 26 seconds remaining in overtime to send Duke past the Tar Heels Apr. 16 in the first women’s lacrosse game to be played at Kenan Stadium. She collected her eighth hat trick of the season, scoring the Blue Devils’ first and last goals of the contest. In addition, Maurer’s assist on a Sydney Peterson goal with 4:12 left in regulation helped the knot the game at 6-6. The junior continues to pace Duke in scoring on the season and ranks second in the ACC entering this week with an average of 4.80 points per game.

Virden, a defender from Ellicott City, Md., helped the Blue Devil defense hold North Carolina to its second-lowest scoring output of the season in the upset victory. One of the team’s key defensive personnel, she posted two ground balls and one caused turnover and helped the Blue Devils win the draw control category by a 9-8 margin, contributing solid play from the wings. Virden currently ranks fourth in the ACC in caused turnovers per game (1.27).

Duke opens ACC Championship play Thursday, Apr. 24 in a 1 p.m. quarterfinal meeting with Virginia at Boston College’s Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
