DURHAM, N.C. – Junior goalkeeper Angel Thompson was among the Duke student-athletes recently honored by the ACC with the league’s Top 6 for Service award, an accolade presented annually to six student-athletes from each conference institution who demonstrate dedication to community service and outreach programs.

Thompson has been active in Reading with the Blue Devils and takes part in other reading programs with local elementary school students. As a member of Duke’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), she organizes the Project Share community service event. In addition, the summer before her sophomore year, Thompson, who hails from The Woodlands, Texas, traveled to Nairobi, Kenya for a mission trip as a youth ministry intern with her church.

Other recipients from Duke included Sean Davis (men’s soccer), Dave Harding (football), Cody Robinson (football), Elizabeth Williams (women’s basketball) and all members of the volleyball team.

Davis continues to be one of the Blue Devils’ leaders in implementing service events, demonstrating a positive approach toward service opportunities. The Holmdel, N.J., native has served as a First Year A.C.T.I.O.N. mentor and has been a leader for the S.O.L.E. Retreat as well as a member of Athlete Ally. Davis is also active on campus, taking part in Duke’s annual Dance Marathon event.

Harding was recognized as a member of the prestigious AFCA Good Works Team in 2013, an honor that is bestowed upon a select group of 11 Division I FBS football student-athletes who display commitment to service in their community or abroad. He received the award after organizing an initiative in which he and 12 members of the Duke football team traveled to Ethiopia to dig freshwater wells for two weeks. Hailing from Orlando, Fla., Harding has also been a part of several community efforts in Durham during his collegiate career, including volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House, Duke Children’s Hospital, Camp Kaleidoscope and INJAZ, a Duke student organization that helps Iraqi refugees establish themselves in the Raleigh-Durham area.

Robinson of McMinnville, Tenn., participated in multiple Read with the Blue Devils events during the year and visited a number of local schools to speak with students about the importance of striving to do their best academically. Always in search of new service opportunities, he has also volunteered with Playworks and the United Way initiative.

Williams has been a part of numerous community service events, including spending time at the Durham Nursing and Rehabilition Center, tutoring students at Lakewood Montessori Middle School and visiting children at Camp Kaleidoscope. The Virginia Beach, Va., native has also made a positive impact through the ASPIRE (After School Programs Involving Recreational Equipment) initiative.

The Duke volleyball team demonstrated a commitment to service this year, hosting events such as middle school clinics, a breast cancer awareness fundraiser, a multiple sclerosis awareness fundraiser and a clinic for members of the TROSA (Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers) program. The Blue Devils also visited a therapeutic riding farm during the year.
