BLACKSBURG, Va. - Freshman Taylor Trimble registered a career-high five goals, including the first three of the game, and the fourth-ranked Duke women's lacrosse team picked up its fifth-straight win with an 18-8 decision over Virginia Tech Wednesday afternoon from Thompson Field.

Duke (8-2, 2-0 ACC) opened the contest with a 7-0 run and took a 9-2 advantage into halftime before outscoring Virginia Tech (4-4, 0-2 ACC) 9-6 in the second period. The Blue Devils dominated the draw 18-8, led in shots 30-15 and were a perfect 11-for-11 on clears for the day.

Nine different Blue Devils scored a goal with Trimble's five tallies leading all scorers. Senior Amanda Jones netted her second hat trick in as many games, while freshman Kerrin Maurer (2g, 3a) and redshirt senior Emma Hamm (2g, 2a) accumulated five and four points, respectively.

"From the get-go, our goal today was to come out hard and sharp and to really dictate the tempo," said head coach Kerstin Kimel. "I felt we were able to do that. More than anything, I'm pleased with how widespread our scoring was. I think that says a lot about where we are right now. We're working really hard on all aspects of our game. To hold [Virginia Tech] to two goals in the first half was a great testament to our defense and how well Mollie [Mackler] played. Overall, it was a good win and I'm really pleased a lot of players contributed today."

Trimble started things off for the Blue Devils, netting three goals in just under three minutes, and picked up her fourth goal after junior Makenzie Hommel had made it 4-0 in favor of Duke. Jones capped off the 7-0 spurt at the 19:13 mark before the two squads traded goals heading into the intermission.

The second half began much like the first with Duke putting together a 6-1 run to take a 15-3 lead midway through the second stanza. Virginia Tech proceeded to rattle off five unanswered over the next seven minutes to pull within seven, but the rally was too little too late and the Blue Devils closed the game with goals from senior Kim Wenger, sophomore Sydney Peterson and redshirt sophomore Maddie Salamone.

Duke returns to action Saturday, March 17, traveling to Hanover, N.H., for a 12 p.m., match against No. 17 Dartmouth.
