DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke University men’s soccer team continued its efforts to give back to the community when it recently donated its free time to volunteer at the Bright Star Stables in Rougemont, N.C. The Blue Devils did a variety of chores the local horse farm owned by Brad and Heather Glazer.

Bright Star Stables is a nonprofit organization which was established in 2010, giving riders with disabilities a place to learn to become effective and competitive equestrians. Therapeutic lessons are conducted at a NARHA (North American Riding for the Handicapped Association) certified facility located Rougemont. At Bright Star Stables they believe in the therapeutic power of equestrian for students of all ages, backgrounds and ability levels. The students, whether they have physical, cognitive, sensory or emotional disabilities are the stars of Bright Star Stables.

“This was yet another way for our team to give back to the greater Durham community,” said head coach John Kerr. “Bright Star Stables is an incredible organization and I think our players really enjoyed what was a new experience for many of them.”

Introduced to the Blue Devils by its strength and conditioning coach Dan Perlmutter, the soccer team took horses out to pasture, cleared the pastures of debris, helped repair fences and cleaned the horses’ stables. Many Blue Devils were introduced to a new experience and relished their time with the horses and enjoyed giving back to an organization that does so much good for others.

Students of all ages come to Bright Star Stables with diverse backgrounds and ability levels.  For children and adults with disabilities, working with horses like those at Bright Star Stables can be a life-changing experience.  Students are taught equine care, riding, handling, and management to their best level of ability.
