DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke University men’s soccer team went through a pair of practices to open the 2013 preseason Wednesday, Aug. 14. The Blue Devils welcome back 23 members of the 2012 squad and bring in four newcomers to the program.

The Blue Devils started the morning with some fitness testing before getting the opportunity to play a full-sided game where the coaches could sit back and evaluate each player in a game-like setting. Duke trained again in the afternoon with each of the guys getting many touches on the ball before calling an end to day one.

“Well it’s always the best time of the year for the coaches and sometimes not so fun for the players because it’s hard work,” said head coach John Kerr. “But we did three major things today. We accomplished the cooper test today and we did a lot of one vs. one to goal and we had a morning session with a full game so we got to see them in different scenarios. It is very good evaluation process for the coaches.”

The squad will be back on the field again for session three Thursday morning. Duke will host George Washington in the first of two exhibitions Aug. 18 at 1 p.m. Stay tuned to for complete details on Sunday’s exhibition match.

“Stay healthy and stay focused and stay rested [is the most important things they need to do] because part of the preseason process is getting through these tough days. We’ll get a lot done. It’s only day one, but these next three or four days are going to be tough for them so they need to stay clean, stay focused and stay rested.”

Duke officially opens the season Aug. 30 in the John Rennie Nike Classic against Rutgers at 7:30 p.m.
