DURHAM, N.C. -- Recently, sat down with senior Alex Merrill to learn more about the Belleville, Mich., native. Name your three favorite things about being a student-athlete at Duke.
Alex Merrill: The athletic department we have around us. We have so much great support. The coaches are great. Ten percent of Duke students are athletes so there’s a huge athletic community on Duke’s campus so sharing support with them, we have a lot of fun together. Walking through airports wearing Duke gear. What is your favorite ‘off the field’ memory?
AM: Last week when we were in Boston. After we won, the coaches let us go downtown and meet some Duke Alumni downtown. It is honestly my favorite memory of college. What are your favorite restaurants in Durham?
AM: If I’m trying to eat a Sunday breakfast it’d be Elmo’s. A nice restaurant to go out to would be Parizades. And I’m going to take my parents to Pop’s tomorrow night. Describe yourself in three words.
AM: Motivated, relaxed and perseverant. Name three foods that you can’t live without.
AM: Pad thai, eggs and ice cream. Name three players you try to model your game after.
AM: I’m a goalie, so I like Peter Schmeichel. He’s really old school. Then there was Tim Howard. He’s really quick and motivated as an American. He plays in England now. Honestly, those are my two favorites, and then there’s Iker Casillas is the best goalie right now that everyone wants to be like.
