Sean Davis and company will be writing a blog chronicling the team's upcoming trip to Brazil. The Blue Devils head to Rio De Janeiro for the World Cup June 15 and will have the benefit of experiencing the world's largest soccer event first hand. Here's what Sean had to say in advance of leaving. Stay tuned to GoDuke.com for updates from the Blue Devils over the next few days.
I’d like to preface this blog by thanking everybody responsible for making this dream trip to World Cup 2014 in Brazil a reality. From alumni and friends, to family and the coaching staff, it is hard to believe that such a monumental trip has come to fruition in such a short amount of time. Our trip to the World Cup exemplifies the astonishing network that both Duke University and the Duke Men’s soccer program have carefully cultivated over many years. The selflessness of the aforementioned network ensures that current members of the team have the most well-rounded college experience as possible. Although the trip has yet to begin, it has already instilled important values in us that would otherwise be unobtainable. One day I dream of giving back to a network that has done so much for me.
As I sit here writing the introductory piece of what will eventually be the team’s daily blog, I can’t help but imagine how incredible the upcoming trip to Brazil will be. I am about to enter my final semester as a Duke student-athlete and as cliché as it must sound, it seems like yesterday that I was eating at Marketplace on East Campus as a freshman. My time here has been unparalleled and the most important ingredient has been the people I have been surrounded with everyday. I will be experiencing the world’s greatest sporting event with my best friends and it’s difficult to put into words just how unbeatable that combination will be. As part of making this trip as interactive as possible, the team will be held responsible for chronicling daily activities and documenting memories that would otherwise be elusive if not for the support of so many others. This blog will include entries from several different members of the team and we hope to offer unique cultural experiences of our journey to Brazil.
In just a few days, the Duke Men’s Soccer team will embark on a journey that will truly be a once in a lifetime opportunity. My goal is to simply enjoy the experience as much as possible: to absorb the cultural facets of a torn Brazil; to somehow freeze time and cement the elegance of Messi and Argentina as they aim to overcome the power of Edin Dzeko’s Bosnia and Herzegovina; and most importantly, to reunite with a group of people that genuinely understand what it means to be a Duke soccer player. In what we hope will be a useful resource for friends and families alike, we encourage you to follow us as we experience World Cup 2014 in Brazil!
