Tzamtzis (5-3) struck out a career-high nine batters and walked five on the night. Ethan Ogburn came on in relief of Tzamtzis and struck out two of the four batters he faced to finish off the game.
Stroman (4-4) had 10 strikeouts on the night, running his NCAA-leading strikeout total to 112. Stroman now has 112 strikeouts in 81 innings, good for a 12.44 strikeouts per nine innings rate. In his eight ACC starts, Stroman has 82 strikeouts compared to just 14 walks.
The 10 strikeouts marked the ninth double-digit strikeout game of Stroman’s career. It was his sixth double-digit strikeout game of the season in 11 starts.
Stroman’s 266 career strikeouts put him at sixth on Duke’s all-time strikeouts list.
Stroman had a strikeout in every inning except two and had a pair of strikeouts in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings. He struck out seven of the nine batters in the Wolfpack lineup, with nine of his 10 strikeouts coming from the second through sixth innings.
N.C. State (28-12, 14-8 ACC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Third baseman Trea Turner singled to left to start the inning. Turner would then advance all the way to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Following a walk to shortstop Chris Diaz, catcher Danny Canela drove Turner in with an RBI-single deep to the hole at short.
In the second, center fielder Jake Fincher had an RBI-triple off the left field wall and Turner added a sacrifice fly to right, giving the Wolfpack a 3-0 lead.
Fincher led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple into the right field corner. Two batters later, Diaz brought Fincher in with a high chopper over Ryan Munger’s head at first, extending the State lead to 4-0.
Second baseman Mark Lumpa and shortstop Angelo La Bruna had the only two hits for Duke (16-27, 7-15 ACC).
Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Sunday’s series finale will be at 1 p.m.
