Former Duke Soccer Captain Passes Away

DURHAM, N.C.—Former Duke University men’s soccer captain John McCauley Braswell passed away while vacationing with his family in Michigan on Friday, July 26, 2013. He was 58 years old.

Braswell was a four-year letterwinner for the Blue Devils and captained the squad in 1976. He helped Duke to a 24-18-3 record from 1973-76. After graduating from Duke in 1977, Braswell went on to a career in law. He resided in Alexandria, Va. with his family and worked at Redmon, Peyton and Braswell LLP.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline Calande Braswell; daughter, Morgan Sarah Braswell; father, Thomas Edward Braswell, Jr., mother, Jeff Armstrong Braswell; three brothers, Harry, Thomas, and Andrew Braswell. The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 1, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 228 S. Pitt St., Alexandria, VA where services will be held on Friday, August 2 at 10 a.m. Interment to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Alexandria, VA. Guest register and additional information are available at: www.everlyfuneralhomes.com.
